Going, going, almost gone...Valentine's Orders
Pssst! Hey you. Yea. You. The one pointing a finger at your chest wondering what in the world I could be pssssting you about. Tomorrow is the very last day to turn in a Valentine's Day order for your child. Or for someone else's child if you like them better. (Just kidding. Maybe.) Or, if you wanted to, you could order a Valentine bear, balloon, and candy and give it to your spouse. No one will know because I will not tell. And you'll look like a hero when they realize you didn't forget. Again.
TSIAA Tournament, 2/13-2/18
Hey hey hey, if you don't have anything to do next week, FRCS will be hosting the TSIAA Tournament Tuesday the 14th (awww, Valentine's Day! I'd be thrilled to go to a basketball game for a date. I mean, those games are intense and super fun!) and Thursday the 16th. Stop by and cheer for your team. Unless you're rooting for the opposing players. Then please. Stay home.
President's Day, 2/20 <--No School!
President's Day will be celebrated by us non-presidents, or in the more common term, peasants, on Monday, February 20th and there will be no school that day. None. Zero. The doors will not open at 7:20 and no children will be admitted into the building. They must stay home and probably sleep in. As should you if you so require.
Re-enrollment and Sibling Enrollment
This is the section of the Parent Page you are more than welcome to ignore if you've already paid your re-enrollment fee to secure your child's spot in next year's school line-up. Or ignore it if you're not coming back here - completely up to you.
But. DO NOT ignore it if your plan is to stay here and you haven't paid. I'm telling you with wringing of my hands and a wild look in my eyes, you don't want to wait. Let's get it done and in the bag before your seat is taken and you're out in the cold. We don't like that.
Enrollment for siblings who are not currently attending FRCS will open February 15th. That's next week.
End of Another Quarter, 3/3
This heading may remind you that you have four, wait, five tests, quizzes, or assignments that are still outstanding and need to be turned in. Before you get a zero in the ole scorebook that directly impacts your grade and ultimately finishes with that face to face conversation you will have with your parents as you try to explain why you didn't think you had to do that work and they take everything fun in your life away until you bring said grades back up. (You're welcome for the idea, parents. I was a mean mom, too. I know how to do this.) (And yes. I know that was a run-on sentence. I like to see if I can read the whole thing in one breath. I couldn't. But I did say it in a monotonous tone that sounded kinda funny.)
To others, that heading might make you think that yeah, school is almost over. Like I did today when I was preparing my files to receive, well, files of papers.
Whether you went a little doom and gloom or yippee kie yay, the third quarter is almost over so get those assignments done. Study and take those tests and quizzes. Let's gallop toward quarter 4 with our focus clear and our spirits high.
Quarter ends: March 3rd
Report Cards come home: March 9th
Garrett Morgan 1877-1963
Have you ever sat at a red light and pondered just who came up with such a great idea? (I do think that some of them are timed way too long but that's a different thought for a different day. Probably the same day we begin talking about turn signals and how and why we should use them. As in everyone. No exceptions. At all ever.)
Or have you ever walked down the hall of the mall and been almost knocked over by an extremely strong smell of someone's cologne and wondered where you could buy your very own gas mask? (Axe and Drakkar users: a little dab will do ya. Thought I'd throw that out there.)
Both of these inventions were created and thought up by a man by the name of Garrett Morgan. Born in Kentucky in 1877, Garrett Morgan was the son of freed slaves and stopped going to school around 6th grade to help support his family.
While he had a fine reputation for fixing sewing machines and other items, he didn't stop believing that he could do something more. His mind, always working and wondering, came up with quite a few inventions that not only were fabulous, but they helped save lives.
In 1916, Mr. Morgan was one of the rescuers to help in saving some tunnel workers after their tunnel had collapsed. Under Lake Erie. (Cue claustrophobia here.) Having come up with a hood type of helmet that would aid in breathing during difficult disasters, the gas mask was born.
Mr. Morgan was an amazing person who, although not treated fairly, put his mind to good use in finding ways that would benefit society and make lives better in such a way that still impacts us today.
I encourage you to study and read more about Mr. Morgan and his awesome inventions. He truly was an inspired man with a great mind.
