Book Reading Contest!
Do you love being able to sit in your nice warm house in the evening, curled up with a book in one hand, a cat on your lap, and hot chocolate in the other? Ok, ok, enough of the negative cat talk. (I don't go around dissing opossums or squirrels because I almost hit a mailbox trying not to hit one, so please. I don't want to hear it regarding cats. I cannot help it if you are heartless and cold. You know who you are. {MK}Thank you.)
While being an avid book reader can help chase the dull, cold winter days away, (there's really nothing quite like sitting in your tree swing reading a book. My husband couldn't find me nearly all last summer. That swing was the perfect hiding spot. One bonus? We went out to eat a lot because he thought he was going to starve to death.) reading often has many benefits.
- reading helps you be a better communicator (I agree. Some of us don't need to communicate quite so much, but hey. If you find what you're good at it, you're supposed to stick with it, right?!)
- reading helps reduce stress (unless you're a notoriously bad cook and you're reading a cookbook. Then I could see a problem)
- reading can help you sleep better (excuse me a moment while I laugh hysterically at this one. Reading a really good book will keep me up for days. Truly.)
- reading expands your vocabulary (which makes it pretty important to read the, um, correct books because using the word 'weevil' at the dinner table while you're eating rice with your dad's boss can cause a problem. Just sayin.)
So, February 1st through February 28th, each 1st through 6th grade class will compete to see who the overall overachieving reader winner will be for their grade. The one with the highest number of books or pages (depending on what your teacher has decided, so kiddos, listen carefully) will win a grand prize while the runner up in the other class will receive a smaller prize.
How cool is that? Dust off those shelves, grab some hot chocolate and the cat (or dog or guinea pig or bird or fish. Whatever.) warm up that gray matter and get reading!
On the heels of that last article, yes, the one just above this one. Yes, the one you just read. Oh, you didn't? (Well lookee who's trying to skim through the parent page again. Caught you. Now go back and read it again. Thank you.) FRCS will be hosting...drum roll please...
...our very first Preschool/Elementary Book Fair!
I was that girl who would lay awake at night and dream of all the books I wanted to get at those fairs. And no, I wasn't the weirdest or the nerdiest of them all. I was actually kind of well, not nerdy. Or weird. But I don't have to defend myself to you so nyah.
Monday, February 28th through March 3rd in the Grand Hall, you will find books books and more books from our friends at Usborne!
Kiddos, you will have a chance of a lifetime. A chance to write down every single book you see that your heart desires and parents? You will have a chance to come through and see what Usborne has to offer. (And what you think Sally really needs. Look at us try to please everyone.)
Books will be open to parents and students Tuesday-Thursday at 7:45-8:30 and Monday-Thursday from 2:30-3:15.
*And just so you know? Preschool parents, this book fair will coincide with the Preschool Dr. Seuss week activities. So lucky you! You will have your very own chance to purchase The Foot Book so you too can read it 500 times to your child until you lose it under the entertainment center.
Speed Limit
I know I know. You were hoping that if you drove 55 mph in the parking lot and caught air going over the speed bump, you would beat the space time continuum and turn back the clock from 8:15 to 7:55. I've been there. Are you kidding me? I'm usually the one who writes those tardy slips, so yes, I get it. But as much as I would love to tell you it's possible, it's not.
If you're late, the best thing to do is, well, be late and still drive the school parking lot speed of 10 mph. If you're really late? Sheesh. Stop and get a Frappuccino because they're worth it. Maybe even a doughnut. (Just remember us poor poor ladies in the office. Sometimes we like Frappes and doughnuts. jk)
So technically, if you weren't passed by a goat, you're going too fast.
And. Just FYI, when you're in the pickup line at the end of the school day? Yea. That's the worst time you can be on your phone. Because kids don't think like we do. Sometimes they forget that they left their backpack in their classroom and before you know it, they're running in front of your car to go get it. Without looking to make sure you see them.
So please. Put your phone down while you're in the pickup line. Who knows what could happen.
Send a Valentine, Due by 2/7
Valentine's Day. That phrase alone either makes you smile or break out in hives. I believe my house is different than most. As in, my husband remembers all the important dates while I remember, well, pretty much none. Unless it's here in the parent page or in the reminder app in my phone, I will forget it. (I still have Christmas cards I need to send out. I'm thinking I'll just wait until next year. Seems a little pointless now. But the good news is I'm ahead of schedule for next year. Go me.)
The FRCS Cheerleaders are doing it again and hopefully, it will make things easier for you! For $10, $7, or $5 a student can deliver a Valentine to your child, your child's best friend, the teacher, or pretty much anyone here at FRCS.
- $10 option includes: a stuffed bear, a balloon, candy of your choice (Hershey bar or Skittles)
- $7 option includes: a stuffed bear
- $5 option includes: balloon and candy of your choice (Hershey bar or Skittles)
Please make your selections known on the above flyer and turn into the office with money attached by February 7th.
- Please fill out one per recipient
- Please clearly indicate which room your child is in. Very Important.
- Please make sure recipient's name is clearly written. Also Very Important.
FRCS Family Enrollment Begins
February 1st has been here and gone and usually that means that current FRCS families get to re-enroll their children. And while that's technically true, there has been a little change from previous years. Let's make it simple for you.
FRCS families can re-enroll their current students from February 1st through the 14th and siblings who are not current students can be enrolled February 15th through the 28th. So yea. There's that tiny little change.
Please, do not hesitate to enroll your students if your plan is to stay here at FRCS because March 1st, FRCS will open enrollment to the community and I honestly don't like telling you all that there isn't room because someone got here first. I kind of take it personally and it makes me want to cry. Please don't do that to the nice office ladies. Thank you.
Spring Pictures, 2/7-2/8
Have you noticed that your little third grader isn't looking as well, little? That suddenly he/she looks older?
Bigger? Taller?! Well here's your chance to capture that image and save
it in your scrapbook or send it out to Grandma and Grandpa so they too
can see the change in your little cutie pie.
Spring Pictures will be February 7th and 8th. Although these are fabulous and fun, they are not required. If you started FRCS later than other students and you didn't get your picture taken in the fall, you'll probably want to do this one. But if this doesn't pertain to you, hey. Do it if you wanna and don't if you...don't. There will be a $5 sitting fee (should you order a package, that $5 will go towards the package of your choice.)

Black History Month
George Washington Carver
What does Axle Grease, Nitroglycerin, and Printer's Ink have in common? They're all by-products of the common peanut!
George Washington Carver is credited with finding 300 uses for the peanut and yet, he did not invent peanut butter.
(Not going to lie. I can get pretty creative with a good, sturdy box, but finding 300 different uses for something is an amazing feat. The struggle is real to find six different meals to make in one week. I am impressed.)G.W. Carver was born a slave around 1864 in Missouri. After being kidnapped and later found by Moses Carver, he was returned and adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Carver after the end of slavery in 1865. Facing many difficulties and hardships, Mr. G.W. Carver didn't let anything stand in his way.
During
a time when black people weren't allowed to be educated, Mrs. Carver
taught him anyway. When he wasn't admitted into college because of his
race, he homesteaded and conducted experiments. He was the first black
student accepted into Iowa State and later was hired by none other than
Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute and helped shape the
future.
If you haven't read about this multi-talented, courageous man, you should. His story is truly amazing and inspiring not to give up when life isn't fair and people treat you wrong and unjustly.
