No School!

After President Washington died in 1799, (if you don't know the story, and don't mind squeamish thoughts like leeches and bloodletting, I encourage you to investigate Ole George's demise) the people of the United States wanted a way to remember him. Remember how awesome and fantastic he was, how he led a ragged group of soldiers through some of the toughest times in history against outstanding odds and won (but only by God's grace). And they thought the best way to do that was to take an entire day off of work. Not to be lazy, but to remember.

So president's day became a thing and we still celebrate it today.

February 15th, FRCS will not have school. (Every time I write that, I hear imaginary cheering from the masses of students and parents alike.) And while you may not be thinking about how fantastic George Washington was on the 15th, we do hope you enjoy your day and pray for those in authority over us. Whether you like them or not. See you Tuesday the 16th. (Unless there is a miracle and it snows and it completely shuts down Middle TN. How much faith does one need to move a mountain...?)

Thank You!

We've tried in the recent past, but let's be honest. Lately our fundraisers have been less than astounding. But the Valentine's Day fundraiser? That was a success. We would like to thank each and every one of you who took part. Out of the 200 fluffy bears that were ordered, (drum roll, please) 200 were sold. Boom. How's that for perfect planning?! There were 175 packages of Sour Patch Kids and 178 M&Ms sold. We thank you from the bottom of our very hyper-sugar-highed toes for participating in this and making Valentine's Day a success!

Remember: Delivery date is February 12th. We wouldn't want you to be unprepared Friday afternoon when you pick up your hyper children. :)

Do Not Procrastinate

Don't do it.
I'm serious. Just don't. Because if you do, we cannot be responsible for the heartache that may happen because you thought you could or should. It's really not a good idea.

It's right around the corner. As in, 17 days away. Three days over 2 weeks until FRCS opens enrollment to the general public.

That's right. It happens March 1st and let me tell you, they have been touring our school and we have had to tell them that we wouldn't take their registration fees until then.

So if you haven't decided yet, or have turned in your reenrollment forms without the $300 registration fee to hold your spot, you probably want to come by the office as soon as possible. It's starting to look like my dog eyeing my hamburger and waiting for me to look away so she can steal it and blame it on the cats.

February COVID Procedures

have not changed. They look the same as they did for the last couple of months.

I kind of feel like 2021 is not waiting with baited breath to rip the rug out from under us at the last minute. I'm starting to have hope that one day I will be able to see people's real faces again. I'll get to see them without that hateful mask. Wouldn't that be lovely?

Here's the rules as a recap:
  • no homemade food brought in as treats for student's classmates
  • absolutely NO visitors are allowed in the halls or commons. If you must come into the building, please come to the office and we will be happy to take care of you. :)
  • someone in your home being tested for COVID? Your student MUST remain home until you receive a COVID negative test
  • weren't lucky enough to get a negative? Well, keep your little blessings home for the next 10 days from the onset of symptoms
  • notify the office of why your particular blessing is not at school

Positive you don't have COVID but Johnny is whiny? His nose is running a very sticky icky color of green? No fever but has a problem leaving the sanctity of the bathroom? Yea. He needs to stay home. We thank you in advance.

George Washington Carver - Did You Know?

What does Axle Grease, Nitroglycerin, and Printer's Ink have in common? They're all by-products of the common peanut!

George Washington Carver is credited with finding 300 uses for the peanut and yet, he did not invent peanut butter. (Look. I'm not going to lie. I can get pretty creative with a good, sturdy box, but finding 300 different uses for something is an amazing feat. The struggle is real to find six different meals to make in one week. I am impressed.)

G.W. Carver was born a slave around 1864 in Missouri. After being kidnapped and later found by Moses Carver, he was returned and adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Carver after the end of slavery in 1865. Facing many difficulties and hardships, Mr. G.W. Carver didn't let anything stand in his way.

During a time when black people weren't allowed to be educated, Mrs. Carver taught him anyway. When he wasn't admitted into college because of his race, he homesteaded and conducted experiments. He was the first black student accepted into Iowa State and later was hired by none other than Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute and helped shape the future.

If you haven't read about this multi-talented, courageous man, you should. His story is truly amazing and inspiring not to give up when life isn't fair and people treat you wrong and unjustly.

Answers to last week's questions:

1. On which day did God make the sun? Day Four

2. The 22nd and 24th presidents of the United States had the same mother and the same father, but were not brothers. How was this possible? It was the same person - Grover Cleveland

3. Two mothers and two daughters were fishing. They managed to catch one big fish, one small fish, and one fat fish. Since only three fish were caught, how is it possible that they each took home a fish? One grandmother, one mother, and one daughter

4. There is a word in the English language in which the first two letters signify a male, the first three signify a female, the first four signify a great man, and the whole word, a great woman. What is the word? heroine

This Week's Questions:

I didn't see very many wet eyes Monday morning, I didn't hear screaming and gnashing of teeth (yes, I'm talking about parents), and I didn't have a bunch of kiddos in my office asking for medicine at 8:05. I'd say that was a win win and another win for the start of a new school year! But, as with anything new, it can take just a little bit to settle into a routine. And ...
